acrylic, blind embossing on original antique print

26.5” x 20.25”

San Francisco, 2018

Part of a series of works that blind-embossed and painted over a collection of 200 year old prints of the plans for the Abbey Church of St. Alban, UK, this piece examines the relationship between the architectural approach to structure and the aesthetic of seemingly random shapes. The colors used are selected from the Sherwin Williams 2018 color forecasts; they complicate the innate sense of peace and worship that churches work to cultivate. The prints were made by John Carter and engraved by James Basire, commissioned by the Society of Antiquaries of London on April 23, 1810.
