New Beginnings

Welcome back to the MPC Studio Newsletter!

These past few months have found us all out of our depths, indoors indefinitely and struggling to readjust. With Covid-19 keeping so many of our daily activities off-limits, we’ve had to find new ways to channel our creativity. Our relationships with family, friends, even ourselves change rapidly as our communities brave the atrocities of the pandemic, political injustice, and heightening climate change. We find our voice in protest, demanding change by taking to the streets and social media alike.

Vote SmArt, San Francisco, 2020

As passing days bring us closer to the US election this November, I’ve been meditating on the role of the artist as an activist. It is our duty as artists to be on the front lines, to defend our community, locally and globally, and voice the needs of our neighbors. We at MPC Studio will be doing all we can to ensure a better tomorrow, and that mission begins with a vote. I have the honor of casting my first vote as an American citizen in this election. I feel proud to share my voice, to do my part in keeping the democracy healthy and alive. Voting is one of the most effective and powerful tools for change, and if you are able to vote, I urge you to exercise that right this November.

NEW ARTWORK

SF No. 23, Peak, acrylic spray paint, corduroy fabric, wood, steel and powder coating, 62.99” x 29.52” x 24”, San Francisco, 2018-2020

SF No. 23, Peak, acrylic spray paint, corduroy fabric, wood, steel and powder coating, 62.99” x 29.52” x 24”, San Francisco, 2018-2020

SF No. 23 Peak is a progression from the large painting SF No. 17, made of upcycled scraps of corduroy. The piece addresses the removal of the artist’s agency in choosing color, as the source fabric tones remain unchanged, affected only by the spray paint lines laid on top. The conglomeration of triangular fragments points to a union of artistic directions, while the spray paint divisions underscore the distance between them. The body of the sculpture is elevated by a sleek metal stand painted in Classic Blue, the Pantone color of the year 2020. As a prominent color trend, this blue activates an emotional response in the collective consciousness, providing a base tone for the vibrant, almost chaotic corduroy atop.

NEWS

As restrictions loosen, MPC Studio has been fortunate enough to open our doors again. We have had the pleasure of reopening the MPC Studio Exchange Program. MPCSEP is a mentorship program for artists seeking guidance in their craft. With our new remote format, we’ve been fortunate enough to welcome an extremely talented group of artists, some newcomers and some who participated in the program last year. We are looking forward to collaborating, and are so excited for what the coming months will bring.
